Birth injuries are perhaps some of the most frustrating cases of medical malpractice because the babies who suffer this type of trauma often aren’t able to live a normal life at all. This is particularly true when infants suffer brain injuries right before, during, or right after childbirth.

Read on to learn three of the most common brain injuries infants suffer as a result of negligent childbirth.

#1 - Head Trauma

If the physician conducting the delivery is not careful, it is possible that a baby can endure head trauma during childbirth. This may include:

  • Superficial lesions
  • Extracranial and intracranial hemorrhages
  • Fractures of the skull bones

#2 - Caput Succedaneum

The main symptom of caput succedaneum is scalp swelling in newborns. While this type of injury often resolves on its own, rare complications may include skin bruising on the area of the swelling and necrosis which can result in scarring and alopecia.

#3 - Skull Fractures

When an infant’s skull is fractured as a result of birth trauma, it’s typically because of instrumented vaginal delivery. The fractures may be linear or depressed and can be asymptomatic unless accompanied by a traumatic brain injury. It’s important that a child with a skull fracture undergoes the proper testing to identify any brain injuries the child may have suffered as a result of the fracture.
